History

Native Americans had lived on Virginia's Northern Neck for thousands of years prior to european settlement. In the mid 1660's, Kilmarnock, originally known as The Crossroads, was settled on what was probably the convergence of Indian paths along present day Routes 3 and 200.

By the mid 1700's, a local businessman and entrepreneur, William Steptoe, began to operate a storehouse and tavern (also known as an "ordinary") at The Crossroads. The Crossroads then came to be called Steptoe's Ordinary.

In the mid 1770's, the town was renamed Kilmarnock after the town in East Ayreshire, Scotland. The first known reference to the town as Kilmarnock appears in a 1778 deed.

The town was incorporated as the Town of Kilmarnock in 1930.
